yes if the flue is not high enough it will cause this problem. has this happened in prior years? try opening a window just a crack in the room with the fireplace that may help. does the flue extend above the roof line? if not that is probably the problem. if it does and the flue is open and you have a window cracked you could have something blocking the flue
birds are bad to nest in the flue so check your flue cap. if no visible blockage and you tried everything else call a chimney sweep.

Without seeing the fireplace or considering some design alterations, I would recommend an electric draft inducer.
The draft will be pulled in somewhere in the house and all smoke will be drawn to the inducer mounted on top the flue.
You still need to inspect the flue and chimney and repair any areas that need it.

Have you checked the flue? And, when was the last time you had the chimney cleaned. It definitely sounds like the flue is closed, or something is blocking the chimney. Don't use the fireplace until you have it checked out by a licensed chimney sweep.

Two things cause it. A clogged flue and too big a flue for the fire. Too big will not draft properly. The best thing to do is to shell out for a professional chimney sweep.

Look inside the chimney and open the damper there before lighting a fire.
Also helps to warm the chimney by burning some paper first.
Keep the fire well back from the front.

Make sure the flue is open. When the fire is out and cold, look up the chimney. You should see a panel, either open or closed. If it's closed, there's a knob/handle/bar to open it. It has to be open when you have a fire to let the smoke go up the chimney

Your firewood must be seasoned (dry) if not the fire will not burn at proper temp. and excessive smoke will cause some nasty problems. Make sure you do not close off the breather vents too much as well. For saftey you should have the chimney checked every couple of years.
