Since I grew up in the USA I prefer an American accent because it is easier for me to understand. That is, I don't have to work very hard to know exactly what is being said. The faster someone else talks the more this is true.

The question is hard to answer, because there's more than just one "American" accent and more than just one "British" accent. Some I like and some I don't, of each variety. I live in America, but there are certain American accents that grate on my ears, while others please me. Same with British English.
