It isn't a "book"; it's a lengthy story in the anthology titled "Skeleton Crew". It's sometimes referred to as a novella, being 133 pages of the book.
At the end, a few people get to a vehicle and begin their escape, finding that the Mist extends as far as they can see and that there is constant danger from the creatures. If I recall, they set out for a destination~a "blip" on the radio I think~not knowing what to expect. It's a completely open ending and went with the uneasiness felt throughout. No one ever knows for certain what happened. Did the storm cause a tear between dimensions? Did the research project do this? To me, there were suggestions of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. After all, Stephen King has written Lovecraftian stories.
I just read a spoiler in a review and was afraid they would do something like that~ruin that eerie ending. I did a search but couldn't find it. If I can track down my copy of "Skeleton Crew", I'll type it here~if no one considers that a spoiler. After all, the story has been around a very long time.

That is sometimes an issue with Stephen King. He writes such great books that the endings are let downs. I don't think it's lazy, I just think that he puts so much into the book and works people into such a frenzy that any ending would seem that way. Yes, I heard the movie is better. Pax-C

The movie is way different from the book. It is sad and depressing, and to be honest, most didn't like it. I don't understand why you don't like it, every book isn't gonna end with the main character dealing with a new enemy or along the lines of that. No, Stephen King isn't lazy, that's ridiculous

RE:
How did Stephen King's "The Mist" book end?
I saw the movie "The Mist" today, and they say the ending was different than the ending in the book. I hated the ending to the movie and it was a good scary movie, but if anyone has read the book version, I would like to know how the book ended. Thanks!

it ends with him listening to a radio for any sign of life, he hears one word and that renews his hope and the story ends. it is really very eerie to read and i am looking forward to seeing the movie.
btw, if you want to see a movie that follows the original book almost to the 't' then watch the movie 'stand by me'.
it is based on a stephen king story 'the body' i believe it is called, and the movie is so close to the book that it is amazing - in fact to my mind that is the main thing that makes it such a good movie.
sadly the majority of movies made from books rarely follow the original storyline and by the time hollywood is finished with it you'd barely know it was supposed to be the same as the book.
shawshank redemption was another that followed the original storyline pretty closely and it is a darned good movie as well.

so it's not a book...why because it's a short story? are you kidding me? so what is it a notebook lol.
It was originally in skeleton crew which is a book, therefore making it...let's see...a book?
But yes the ending in the BOOK, is left up to your imagination. They end up driving into the mist.
