XP Home edition is the OS. The video driver I want to install is Acer AL1716. Control panel won't let me change the drivers. No internet sites tell you how to do this. they tell you how to do 9X, 2000, & ME. But not XP.

You used a store-bought XP or non-Acer Recovery disk. How do I know that? Because your Acer drivers are missing.

First off, the Acer AL1716 is an LCD monitor, not your PC's graphics card. It would help if you told us whether you have a desktop or laptop AND the model number.

Then:

Read the Acer User Manual and read all about how to create and use your Recovery disks. All the necessary drivers are there.

Still stuck? Call Acer tech support to get replacement Recovery disks.

If you have the Drivers CD, install that. Otherwise, go to Windows update and do the updates. You can also click on the Drivers part to the left to get the drivers you need automatically.

You can go to the Acer Website and find the drivers for that video card.

To update drivers, you right click on My Computer, choose properties, then the Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Expand the Display adapter tab, then double click on your video card thats displayed there. Then click Driver tab, then click Update driver. You then have to find the drivers for it, and browse to it. You might need to google your video card for the correct driver.
