I don't give a stuff about global warming, it's going to happen even if we all revert to medieval methods of life, and the sooner we all accept this and stop allowing our governments to brow-beat us and tax us till we bleed, the better.
As a petrol-head, the only problem I have with 4x4s is that they're pretty crap things to drive, compared to a similarly powerful car, to no useful advantage. Having driven many examples, I can say that I'd far rather drive a Jag XJR or an S-Class Benz than any Range Rover, M-Class or X5, there's just no competition in terms of performance, handling, comfort etc.
I think the reason 4x4s get such a bad rap is down to the bully-boy (and girl!) attitude of many of their drivers, who think you'll always get out of their way because of the size of their Chelsea Tractor. It's always fun to put their nerve to the test against my work's Transit van, when I'm driving that!

The 4x4 is seen as an unnecessary status symbol by many. The "perceived" arrogance of trendy 4x4's such as hummers, range rovers, jeeps, X5s and mercs just compounds peoples frustration
I don't think its out of jelousy, i think its because they find them too tall to look around, too big for parking spaces. The environment gives people a factual target for thier annoyance.
One of my cars is a v12 6 litre. I can guarantee a range rover will get more negative "environmental" abuse than my car if they were side by side.
I live in remote UK. I have no need for a 4x4 car so there is little need for them in Chelsea. But, having said that, there is no need for me to have a car that produces 450 BHP and can top 180 MPH.
For the limited mileage i do in my best car it certainly does have an impact on the environment. But the Chelsea tractors impact peoples daily lives because of thier size and view blocking - thats why people get annoyed at them.
People see my car as a celebration of british engineering, they see 4x4s as an indulgance that causes hassle.
So really, the abuse probably stems from the strerotype of the driver, a bit like how many people dislike BMW or Ferarri drivers because they believe they know what the driver is like before they have met them.
....wifey wants an L200 for some reason.

Yes, the world has gone mad. 4x4s are somewhat contraversial. I love the hobby of 4 wheeling as well as classic v8 muscle cars. I hate those liberal idiots that think everyone else is destroying the world, not them. I'm almost getting used to them which is sad. There are so many! Damn hippies! Everyone fantasizes about Lamborginies and Ferraries which get about 10 mpg. My grandpas V8 chevy deisel and it got about 19 mpg! We went 4 wheeling that week and drag raced on the beach on that tank still getting 19!

The environmental movement has been take over by socialist types who want to impose their view of the world on the rest of us.
Global warming has taken on a religious fervor, and those of us who either do not believe that it actually exists or believe it is a natural cycle are treated like we are lower than child molesters!
I am old enough to remember the first Earth Day, and the sky is falling chicken little types were all in a dither about the coming ice age! Now it is global warming! The climate is cyclical, and will get warmer and cooler over the years!

Do you do any off-road driving?
If you don't then you shouldn't be driving a vehicle such as that regardless of emissions.
