The model is put together in the bottle using long tools to reach inside.

The answers above are correct. But there is a way to cheat, though its hard to hide what you did. You build the boat outside the bottle with small hinges or swivels at the base of each mast. This makes the ship collapsible. Then its slipped into the bottle and all you have to do is set up the masts again.

The model is first assembled and painted outside the bottle, then dis-assembled and put into the bottle using long nosed pliers and special purpose made tools

The real answer is they blow the whole bottle except for the end, then place the ship inside and melt the end of the bottle on. It's really very easy to do if you know anything about glass.

You got me!!!! OK so I'm a model builder
that hole in the bottle..... we actually build the ship piece by piece with long tools. It's more discouraging than rewarding, but that's why we do it.
