Most mean people feel inferior to others and think they have to put others down in order to feel better about themselves. So try to remember this when they make you feel bad. Then their meanness will not bother you so much and you can KEEP YOUR COOL.
If you can keep your cool you may be able to be nice to mean people and eventually make them your friends. Then they may not be as mean as often. A quick way to disarm a mean person is to act like they are making a funny joke or agree with SOMETHING (not everything) they have said or change the subject.
Remember; you are a child of God and deserve to be here. You are always just as good as anyone else. Always! So NEVER believe someone who puts you down or is mean to you.

The only thing in this life that you can control is yourself.
You cannot control what others do, but you CAN control your reaction.
If someone is mean, you can take their power to hurt away by
1) devaluing their worth (you can do this in many ways, but i choose to quietly reassess them and categorize them as an idiot, ignorant, or otherwise not worth oxygen)
2) ignoring them and not responding
As for why, there are too many reasons to mention, but some are:
low self esteem
mental health issues
anger management issues
confusion
personality disorders
jealousy * this being the most common...

Remember, you cannot control other people. You can be positive, surround yourself with good people and spread as much love as you can.
