How many airplane are in the air per day?

"I have been told that at one time durring the noon hour about 4000 airplanes in our skys. Im not sure if that # includes civilian planes or not but i dont think it would considering how many of those are in the air too. 4000 sounds about right for the commercial/cargo airplanes."

At any one time of day or night, there are roughly 22,000 planes in the air over the US.
