he was only nationally famous after they started trying to put him in jail

John Gotti was nationally known before they tried to arrest him. Al Capone was the most notorious gangster in American History. Still is as a matter of fact. There wasnt television. But there WAS radio. And newspapers.

America during the 1920's was very prosperous and people really invested in the stock market. Business had increased after WW1 and that's when America really started becoming the dominant world power. People were having fun. But eventually people bet too much money on the stock exchange and lost. After the 1920's came the Great Depression in the 1930's.

Are you asking was he nationally famous? I really don't think so. There was no TV back in those days.

At any rate, I would suggest a more appropriate appellation for him would be "infamous", rather than famous.
