Especially when 99.9% of them don't have a gun, would be scared to use one if you gave it to them, and the first time they came under fire would crap their pants and cry for mommy to save them.

Don't be so sure.
Think about the last Dem and Rep conventions.
At the Dem convention the Reps protesters stayed in their little roped off area a mile away.
At the Rep Convention the Dem protesters were running around attacking the VP with snow balls.
They might have put out an eye.

If they had a registered gun the government would know and it wouldn't be of much use. You don't know what everyone has, and if people are smart they won't let the government know either...
