Two friend and I went to a hotel:

We had to pay $30 for a double room so we each payed $10 (3x10=30)
The owner apparently forgot to mention to the receptionist that this night was on special for $25/night.
The receptionist brought us the five dollar back, we gave him two dollars as a tip out of the five and kept 3 dollars (1 dollar each)

So we now each payed $9 per person (9x3=27) + we gave two dollar back to the receptionist (27+2=29)

What in the world happen to the last dollar?

Happy thanksgiving thinking about that! :-)

This is a common problem. There is an error in the logic behind the last statement. There is a tracking of the money from start to finish.

3 guests give $10 each = $30 with the receptionist

Receptionish gives $5 back ~> $5 with guests + $25 with receptionist = $30

You give 2 back to the teller ~> 3 with guests + 27 with receptionist = $30

All the money is still accounted for.

You had to divide the 25 dollars with the 3 of you so that turns that you did not pay 9 dolars you paid in total 27 dollars with the 2 dollars of the receptionist so that's why 3*9=27 you still gotta count the 2 dollars of the receptionist in and in total you paid 27 dollars and the other 3 you and friends got 1 9x3= 27 +3 =30...

all the money is accounted for
because the $27 is how much they spent
$3 is how much they have with them, so this adds up to the original amount in their pocket $30.

the problem with the logic is that $27 is the cost of the room and the tip, not just the room, so 27+2 = 29 is an insignificant equation.

hope this helps!

so eventually all of you paid $27, $25 to the owner, and $2 dollars to the receptionist. that's what happened.
