I have been involved with the Paranormal since I was 5 years old. The first answer you got sounded way to paranoid. Yes, there are a few groups are not as well trained and a few do do it for money. They are far and between.
I have been doing Paranormal Investigations for a few years now and we do not ask for money or anything. All of us have special gifts and we use them to help other people. If it is something that is from the Demon origin than we have a friend that does nothing but deal with Demonology and he has been doing it for over 35 years.
I would not worry about going to College and wasting money you don't have to go to just to be involved with the Paranormal. One of your answerers was telling you the truth about groups (honest ones) will take out Newbies. Our group has taken out several Newbies and now they are members of our Group.
I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan and I found out Saturday that we have someone who I have been helping out in
Scotland and she wants to be a member but wil be opening a Chapter of our group. So, we have expanded to another Country now. We have ones that live in Florida and Arkansas that we have trained and have opened Chapters of our group there also.
I have been so blessed to have so many honest and hard working and caring people in all of our groups.
Being a Paranormal Investigator is very rewarding. If you lived near me our group would take you out as a Newbie and you would be involved with something but it would be something easy and when we investigate we must all have a partner with us. NO one is ever to be alone. We have done some pretty scary places but we are seasoned and know what to do. Yes, there are times when we have all been scared but we try to work through that as a family group.
Good Luck with finding a great group.

Sure there is hope. I've been doing it for two decades.
The best way is to find some local paranormal investigators in your area. Most are willing to take newbies out. Just start studying, going on investigations, and the doors will start opening. Just make sure you get with some good people.

Yahoo Meet-ups may be the answer if you live near a larger metro area.

Of course you can learn it in college - but it's not called that.

Here's the real deal for you: Physics is physics whether we're discussing ghosts or fision. Psychology/sociology is still psychology/sociology if we're talking about people's belief in ghosts or their belief in God.

Literature is still literature whether it's a story about lovers or ghosts. Same with folklore. History (and especially genealogy) are still history and genealogy whether we're talking about well known families or occasionally seen ghosts...

If you study paranormal phenomena based on the facts and not on "feelings and intuition" then you use the same tools and methods as all other scientists - it's just that the subject of your study is not within the normally explained realm.

You will need to determine which specific area of paranormal experience you want to study and follow that. Are you interested in ghost stories (literature, folklore, history) or the psychological reaction of people to such stories (psychology, sociology) or the natural science exploration of such stories (biology, physics, etc...)?

I have a friend that is studying a local ghost story as a function of history. She collects the stories about this particular ghost and tries to connect the story to the historical facts. She uses census and historical narratives among other sources.

Hi,

I too am a Paranormal Investigator and you have to be careful with some of these nut job groups that claim to be legit Paranormal groups. I belong to Paradigm and the main person is a close friend of mine. We investigate hauntings and free of charge to the people who contact us.

Now you can start your own Paranormal group but be aware there are nut jobs who will want to join so you need to weed them out carefully. I love investigating and having a gift like this is special and I don't just share it with anybody because people will take advantage of you.

I don't know if that was of any help but if you have any further questions please feel free to ask, this is my passion.
