Hello, I've been searching for the past four or five nights for the right Greek island to visit with my girlfriend in August 2008. We are both in our early 30's if this helps. I have been to Ayia Napa (Cyprus), Mali (Crete) and Falaraki (Rhodes) all brilliant holidays but these are too lively for what we want. We are looking for somewhere with a nice beach/s and a little bit of nightlife that’s popular with UK holidaymakers. Laganas in Zante was perfect just as the season was kicking in with the beautiful restaurants running all the way down the beach front and the quite busy open out modern pubs on the main strip. Something similar to this would be perfect as we want to try other islands. We have looked at Mykonos but this looks quite expensive, especially near to paradise beach. Santorini seems like it would be nice but a little quiet? Lesbos I think would be to quiet.. Could anybody recommend something suitable?

In August just about every island will be lively but it isn't just about which island, it's also about which resort as you can often find very lively and very quiet resorts on the same island. Laganas in May might be quiet, go in August and it would be heaving and, possibly, rowdy.

You're probably right about Mykonos being expensive, but it's one heck of an experience. Santorini is stunning around the rim of the volcano but that part also tends to be expensive, I doubt you'd find the rest of it quiet in August. If you went to one of the bigger resorts on Lesbos I doubt you'd find it too quiet at that time of year. Paros is fun, Great beaches, loads of back-packers and ferries flying everywhere - you could get a ferry/tour boat to Santorini, it really is stunning to visit by boat. Also, have a look at Skala on Kefalonia, seems very popular from what I've heard.

Hi ! I believe Chios is the best for you. Villages built on plains or rocks and others near the coast, full of smells and sounds of the fresh wind and the deep blue sea of the Aegean are hugging around the island. Chios is a hospitable island and his residents are polite and peaceful, ready tο welcome with love and kindness every new visitors. In the island there are many beautiful and clean sandy and pebbly beaches where you can enjoy your bath with your family and friends or by yourself in a more isolated coast. Moreover, there are many good places to visit, villages with historic monasteries, castles and, many other opportunities. Those who like sports can go sailing or climbing. Especially in the summertime the weather is often windy and under these circumstances you can find your self in one of the islands' beaches and do sailing and wind-surfing. At the end of the day you can have a good time in the nightclubs, restaurants and cafeterias of the island, enjoying your drink with music and good company.

Lefkada is great and Parga (mainland same airport as Lefkada - 40 mins from airport)is even better but smaller! Nidri (45mins-1hr from airport)in Lefkada has a nice easy night life but the beach isn't great (make sure you get a hotel with a pool) - the beaches around Lefkada are the best in Greece but you'll need a car - you can stay near a better beach but you won't get the Brits so much, Anywhere in Greece is very busy in August. Parga is/was a small fishing village which has expanded - great nightlife has a lovely beach and a small town beach - In August (14th) it has a brilliant celebration for St Mary - fireworks etc - hire a car and you can visit all the lesser known places along the Preveza-Igoumentisa coastline! If you are near Preveza on the first Sat of August - give us a visit and see the sardine festival!
From Parga you can take trips to Paxos and anti-Paxos as well as Immoudia (love that place! only Italian tourists have found it) When we are in Parga we eat in the mountain villages (Anthousa) when in Nidri in Lefkada we eat at the Chinese (pretty good Chinese!)
Apart from Corfu it's one of the closest Greek airports to UK .

I totally agree with Asimenia, Parga is a nice destination to go and there are several little villages close by to visit and enjoy all that you want to. Even Mourtos further north on the same coast , with the beautiful coves and beaches is a must. Paxos is only a short boat trip either from Parga or Corfu and there too you can have all that you ask for.
Being a Corfiot I would like to suggest Corfu but I see you want quieter places to make the most of it. But that island if you haven't gone yet is full of places to fulfill all your desires.
Then Lefkada has some of the most breathtaking beaches in Greece and night life to suit your taste too.

I will respectfully disagree with the previous entries. As lovely as Parga is, first it is not an island and secondly in August it is one of the places to be avoided. I have to add that August is NOT a good month for holidays. Too busy.
Having said that if one has not been to Santorini, one misses perhaps the most astounding of the Greek isles in terms of nature.

Santorini is not too quiet, in Fira (the main town) there are clubs, bars, restaurants etc. It is an amazing island, in regard to the landscape, architecture, monuments, etc., but the beaches are not so great (they are not bad either). It's worth visiting.

What I would suggest for you is
1. Kos: great beaches, good food, interesting monuments, nightlife, if you don't stay in Kardamena town it won't be too lively. Personally I would avoid Kardamena.

2. Paros: perfect beaches, nice towns, and lively enough!
