Nancy Zieman did a 2 part series on Landscape quilts and has coauthored a book. You can go on her website: www.nancysnotions.com and watch the broadcasts for free. It had everything including how to add details with markers and crayons to the appliques.

You need to have perspective. that means you need to have things that are close to you as you look into the distance need to be visual so you can get the perspective. For example, say you are sitting on a bench in the garden and you are looking at the mountains in the distance, but you are looking past the lake with the sail boats, which is on your right, and you notice in your sight directly in front of you some pretty tiny lavender flowers in the grass, blowing in the gentle breeze, but that the whole clear view of the scene in front of you is obscured by the leaves from a tree that you are sitting under, just a few hanging down in front but more to left of you. That is the scene you see, including the leaves from the trees. Those leaves would be large, life size because they are there in your face (sort of) then you visualize the mountains in the background of the scene, but they or not large and you actually don't see the whole span of maountains across the picture because the tree leaves are hanging down on the left of the picture, with a hint of what's behind it. You can do the same effect if you top the whole scene off with the edges of the picture in a window frame, the viewer gets the whole picture scene as from inside a window
The important thinf about pwerspective is that the eye is drawn to the center of the picture as the focal point of the whole scene. Things are large in the foreground and smaller in the background. I am still part way through my Rainforest scene, The large trees and leaves in the foreground are clear and precise and the center of the picture shows the full length of the trees and the background behind them is unclear and indistinct. Still a work in progress, but my tutor and other classmates all agree the perspective is perfect.
I hope I have helped you a little. All the best with your finished product

To get the effect of distance, make similar pieces of different colors. Check out these photos
