If sales are negative on the year, you're in the red. If sales are up, you're in the black. The fourth quarter is the money maker for retailers, and the day after Thanksgiving begins the upward momentum! Happy shopping...

Because of the large amount of shopping, it's the moment of the fiscal year when shops traditionally move from the red (not making money) to the black (making a profit). At least, that's where the term comes from.

In this case, black is good, unlike black wednesday or black thursday.

It has to do with the color of the ink they (merchants) keep track of their business. When you are in the "red" means your business is doing bad and if you are in the "black" you are making a profit. "Black Friday" is the day most merchants hope to stay in the black or get in the black with huge sales from people shopping for Christmas.

Kuik's answer is bullcrap, that's 'black friday' simply by fact agencies must be 'in the pink' (doing badly) all 365 days, and this can be the sooner or later they had all be 'in the black' (doing properly).

Because that's the day that all of the businesses make enough money to get back into the black.

I don't know. Maybe because too many people go out and spend too much money that they don't have and then feel like they are followed by a black cloud afterwards cause they don't have the money they need for more important things.

Everyone shops a lot and the stores are "in the black." (Meaning they profit instead of lose money which would be "in the red.")
