That's how ancient advanced civilizations died out...isn't it? They had knowledge, but would not spread it to the next generation....and it died out.
We still are not certain how the Egyptians built such enormous stone monuments and buildings. That knowledge wasn't passed on.
Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost.

Personally I have always enjoyed sharing my knowledge but I am seriously considering not doing it anymore b/c it takes a lot of effort to acquire knowledge and so the people that want to know the easy way (by asking a knowledgable person) are getting off too easy. I mean if someone does help you out they are doing you a tremendous favor and actually should be paid for the info....but usually they just offer it for free because it makes them feel good. But, when you sit down and think about it....the person that gets the info the easy way is getting off too easy and if he doesn't really show his appreciation then that could make the person with the original knowledge feel used and maybe that is why they no longer share their knowledge. He thinks, "You know, like go find out for yourself like I had to do".

People who posses knowledge and refuse to share it will get nowhere in life. Still, this is my opinion, but what is smartness when it is not shown? I know some people who are so smart, but then only to get attention say stupid things, or make rude comments. This happens ALOT in classes of mine, and it bothers me to know that people actually do this. This is why I am so glad there are websites like these, where you can share all of your knowledge, and expeand on it as well. The world needs smart people. If we didn't, where would we be today?

Well, they are ignorant people it seems to me.
Also, there are some persons who will intentionally keep quiet about actual knowledge since sharing that knowledge can hurt their business which is based on mediocre or false ideas. Rather than admit a competitor has a better product or idea, they will be completely silent on the topic or falsely try to berate the better idea.
Years ago Thomas Edison's company tried to berate the sound ideas of Nicoli Tesla because Tesla's ideas would financially hurt some aspects of Edison's many businesses.

It would depend on why they won't share. Sometimes people who ask for insight never listen to what is said. Some knowledgeable people don't know how to get the point across like teachers do.

Hiroshima may not have happened if Einstein did not share his knowledge. (That is not to say that some other city would not have taken it's place.)
For most types of knowledge - this is foolish and the failure to share shall be at their own loss as others see it pointless to share their information in turn.

They have no time or no interest to share with others or too dumb to think about sharing. If they are asked and still refuse to share ,they are selfish or they want something back for sharing.

They are doing nothing to better the human race as a whole. All humans should share their knowledge. Those who don't are selfish.

I think everyone has the right to refuse knowledge to anyone as long as it doesn't pose a threat to the society.
