Hey guys, I have a few questions for a lab report I'm doing, any help or answers to any or all questions would be really appreciated:

What is the scientific name for vinegar?

What is the chemical formula for binegar?

What type of compound is vinegar?

What is the scientific name for the active ingredient in Alka-Seltzer?

What is the chemical formula for the active ingredient in Alka-Seltzer?

What type of compound is the active ingredient in Alka-Seltzer?

What is the equation for the reaction being observed? (balanced equation would be best)

What type of reaction is taking place?

All your help is really greatly appreciated, I'll be doing my own research on these questions and waiting for your responses, thanks guys.

Vinegar's proper name is Acetic Acid.

Its chemical formula is HC2H3O2 or, in its structural formula, CH3COOH. (NOTE: All numbers in a chemical formula are subscripts)

Vinegar is an acid, as the name Acetic Acid implies.

The ingredient that you are seeing a reaction from is a carbonate. Alka-Seltzer does not have on its website any information about which carbonate is being used, therefore I cannot give that information here. However, I know from the line of questioning what information you are looking for and will continue to provide all information I can. I am assuming that the carbonate is Sodium Carbonate since it woud produce the least number of side effects to the human body. Another possible compound is Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), but my experience tells me that the unhydrated carbonate holds together as a solid better than baking soda's very powdery form.

The formula for Sodium Carbonate is Na2CO3.

HC2H3O2 + Na2CO3 ~> 2 NaC2H3O2 + CO2 + H2O

This is a double replacement reaction.
