For example, if the CEO of McDonald's stops by a franchised McDonald's to get something to eat, and he saw an employee use foul language towards a customer, does he himself have the authority to fire that employee, or must he contact the owner/manager of the restaurant?

Andrew, you make a good point, but setting that aside, I still would like to know strictly if he does or does not have the authority to fire the employee.

A McDonald's executive does not go around the owner of the franchise. He would tell the ownder of that franchise to fire the employee.

from my understanding, if a mcdonald's corporate employee catches an employee doing anything against company policy, the restaurant owner/manager are responsible for their reaction to the act of indescretion.

well.
since it's the manager's responsibility i think the ceo would obviously tell the manager to fire him since he's too rich to do menial work.
