Because they catch your attention and a sense of pity even though they may not want it. Many disabled get annoyed at the stares because they can feel the pity behind those stares.

Some of us have hidden disabilities-- that means you cannot always tell by looking at people who is disabled.

It is natural to notice folks who "look" different than the average.
That is not rude in and of itself.

I would rather have someone ask me about myself. Starting a conversation establishes some common ground.

If you observe someone having a hard time, you might ask if they need your help if you are so inclined to. Some of us may say "Yes, please" and then tell you how you can be of assistance. Or you may not feel like helping and that is okay too.

Disability can happen to anyone and that is a very hard thing to face. I was not always disabled. I became disabled four years ago due to a car accident.

Here I must say that disabled people can also act rudely. Rudeness is [unfortunately] a human characteristic which is not always limited to those who don't have disabilities.

Here's to a better understanding between us and a better world for all of us.

There is NOTHING wrong with looking. When I see someone with a disability - especially in wheelchairs, I look as well - even though I have worked in disability services and have contact with people with all sorts of disabilities for many years. My late very close friend was a powerchair user and I went out and about with him all the time and yet I would still looked if I saw someone else in a wheelchair usually to see what sorts of disability they have or what type of wheelchair they use.
It is a natural human behaviour to want to see what is the difference about that person.

There is, however, a big difference between looking and staring.

You feel that way because I believe most of us were raised not to stare at someone who is disabled. I am disabled to and I look at the others who are too, because I wonder what they have wrong with them. I know if someone asked me what was wrong, I would ask them if they have the time to listen. LOL

I am disabled person. I have a hearing disability and I am hearing impaired person and people can be rude to me and I don't know why. But I may know what is the reason of why are you rude to disabled people is they are keeping asking for some help and they don't know how to do some things and they are always asking you all the time to make sure they understand everything. And non-disabled people don't like that because they can't take it anymore. Maybe this is the reason of why are you rude to disabled people. Maybe? It happened to me, because since I can't hear, I don't understand what people are saying and I always asking to them what are they saying. And first time, they are happy to help me but I don't still understand and then I asked them for second time, and they told me again. BUT I don't still understand them and I asked again for third time and they can't take it then they became so rude to you. I think that's why. I hope you understand this answer. Also, other people like adults, my friends and my family are not so rude to me because they understand me why I am always like that and they are so generous. But some people are still rude to disabled people. Maybe that's why you are rude to disabled person. Maybe? I hope I helped....

I have a physical disability. It's called Cerebral Palsy. It's mostly in my legs. When I go out in public I know people look at me. On time I was in walmart. I was going out. Some girls were sitting on a bench. They were with their father. They saw me. I walked up and said "Do you think my walk is funny?" Their laughing turned to low frowns. The father did not know what to say lol.

You have a curiousity, is my guess. Just don't let it become too open to the person because they will think you ARE staring, and in a not so nice way. Try going up to the person and talking to them. Might help both you and the person.

Maybe because you have sympathy for the person. I get stared at alot, sometimes I feel for the wrong reasons (ie, I'm a woman, men stare, etc), but a person who does it just out of curiosty is not bad. Talk to the person, don't hide your interest.

When I see a disabled person... with difficulty walking... especially Cerebral Palsy... I am humbled. I sometimes whine when my feet hurt,/.... But I see a guy who is out there in the world, getting around with great difficulty. And I ask myself, would I have the guts?

'Cause that's what I think... People who have to struggle everyday, and keep on going have Guts!
