It is not the birthday of Jesus Christ. It comes from an old pagan holiday, to celebrate the winter solstice. No where in the Bible, does it give the date of his birth. It is believed to be in late Oct. because it says that ,shepherds were in the fields yet. If anyone can prove that he was born on Dec. 25, I surely would like to see the proof.

Originally or now?
Originally it was a winter solstice celebration.
When days shortened in the northern hemisphere
there wasn't much to do or look forward to so I
guess that's how it came about.
And when it's cold you like a big feed.
The Romans called it Saturnalia.
But they liked to have a big feed any time.
They had all sorts of holidays for various gods.
Christians replaced "pagan" holidays with their own.
St. Nicholas was a real person who gave toys
to poor children.
Now children are told that they will get presents if
they are good but as it turns out the rich kids get
all the good presents whether they are good or not.
That's why we don't celebrate Christmas.
I don't have a family either.
We all went our separate ways a long time ago.
Christmas is mainly a family reunion.
A lot of people over eat, get drunk and start fights.
Stores make a lot of money because people
buy stupid decorations and cheap presents that
nobody really wants.
Most Christmas toys are broken in a week.
It's a good time to go overseas.

It was very common for prehistoric people to have a mid-winter festival to mark the change from days getting shorter to days getting longer (in the Northern hemisphere). Much later, Christianity took over these festivals in order to try to impose the new religion on people without invoking too much rebellion.

We are celebrating Jesus's birthday. While we do not know exactly when he was born, we use the 25th of December to designate a day of celebration :)

Jesus was actually born in the springtime (see Bible, the birth of animals etc...)
December 25th was actually a pagan holiday
I'm guessing the church wanted to cover up the pagan holiday, with the birth of jesus christ.
