Santana said earlier in the season that the franchise would not go any where if they continued to get rid of high quality players. Getting rid of Hunter today sure doesn't help. Do the Twins plan on making any big pickups during this offseason now that they lost one of the best outfielders in baseball?

torii hunter was a free agent and decided to sign with a different team. he's a good, high profile player thats worth alot so the twins, a small market team, couldnt afford to sign him so they didnt get rid of him. theyre never going to have alot of money, so they have to manage themselves like the a's, develop good young players all the time, while getting the most out of their money. they are trying to trade johan santana, and are trying to get around 4 young prospects to replenish the farm system and with liriano coming back and boof bonser, dealing santana wouldnt completely destroy their rotation. but dont count on them signing any big name free agents, it just wont happen with a budget like theirs.

Of course it doesn't help. 40 Million dollars is a lot of money, and it's especially a lot for a team that plays in Minnesota. Their payroll is nowhere near the top 10, and they're getting worse and worse every year. Now Santana is right, if the Twins start getting rid of their quality players, then they won't get anywhere, because clearly Torri Hunter was the leader of that team.

Also the Twins are looking at a hefty price to resign, Johan Santana who wants 5 years, 85 Million, which is also way out of the Twins budget. If the twins can giddy up, and sign some young, hefty players, they will get better and better, but they can't sit around and wait for players to come to them, no one wants to play in Minnesota.

The twins didn't really get rid of hunter, he wanted to stay as long as it was on his terms, the highest dollar.

He signed a 5 year deal worth $90 million dollars.
Let's not fool ourselves to think that anyone really cares about the loyalty.

Yes, we know that baseball players have these really short careers SOMETIMES, but when someone will make in one year, what you won't make in your life, it does come down to how much is enough.

If Santana really wanted the Twins to sign Hunter, he could have said "listen, sign me to a 6 year, $24 million dollar contract and use the rest to sign Hunter"
It's not fair, but I am sure they would have done it and $4 mil a year is enough to retire on, I'm pretty sure.

People believe that the only way you can succeed is by the big pickups, let's face it, the twins have to outbid people to get them to come to Minnesota, it's a game they seem to not need to play.

Now that Hunter is gone, Santana is going to want to leave as well. No one wants to be with a franchise that collects money by selling players. The Twins are making stupid moves, they assume that since they started losing, its time to give up on everyone.

Unfortunately for Twins fans the owners are not willing to spend money on players to field a winner. I believe they were willing to let Hunter go so they could save their money and try to resign Santana within the next year. What kind of a message would they be sending to their fans if they let both Hunter and Santana go? You can bet they will make a real effort to sign Santana.

Rumor in Boston is the Twins are interested in Coco Crisp. The Red Sox will not deal him cheap. If the Twins cannot sign a contract extension with Santana, look for the Twins to trade him. Twins = Marlins. No spending, only interested in young players who get league minimum.

The Twins are in a bind, although Pohlad could get them out of it. He is the riches owner in baseball, but he does not want to spend his own money. So, they let Hunter go--Twins fans have to hope it's to be able to afford Santana, Mauer, Morneau, etc.
But please not Coco Crisp.

#29/30 Marlins last year $30,507,000

And the Twins never make a splash in Free Agency unless you think jeff Davanon or damon hollins are a splash!! who? thats the question i tend to ask myself every time the twins sign anybody..

The twins are too cheap and never make a big splash for players. Which is said becuase I think they have a great fan base.

I don't think the Twins can afford 90 million dollar contracts at the moment, so I think it's a good move from Twins upper management point of view.
