This week i started to hear a clank, but i could never figure out where the noise was coming from until this morning when i started to hear a thumping noise. I then parked the vehicle at a gas station where i looked underneath, and found the passenger side rear shock absorber was separated from the frame. Last year Sears auto center replaced the shocks. Could it be possible that the mechanic didnt tighten the mounting bolts enough, or could they just snap?

Shocks can break. It's also likely that the nut wasn't tightened properly. The bracket that they fit into could also have broken.

Yep, happened on the right rear of a Dodge Caravan. The shocks hadn't been changed, the shock wasn't binding or locked up, no hard driving, no nothing. Sometimes things just happen. I suspect the stud had a crystalized area from the get go.

Sounds like the "Clinking" was the 'Shock Bushings' has Warn Out and maybe Fallen off, Shock Froze Up or Broke and the Excess Broke the "Mounting Stud".

"Causes"; Extremely Hard Driving! Bushings not Lubed or Checked when Vehicle is Serviced, Bushings Not Replaced and Lubed when Shocks are Replaced, Excess Weigh on one Shock or the Other.

are you refering to the rear coil spring assembly? yes it happened on my 2001 taurus without a recall, happening to people who live in the snow belt states from salt on the roads.
replace them with monroe struts (solid body) so they wont fall apart and have a lifetime warranty.

either or couldve happen, but its more than likely that the mechanic didn't tighten the bolt tight enough, this is from my husband who is a mechanic.
