log[2](16)= a number X which is answer to 2 ^ X =16

(where ^ X means raise to power X)

but we know (you can calculate it easily) that
2 ^ 0 = 1
2 ^ 1= 2
2 ^ 2= 2*2=4
2 ^3= 2*2*2=8
2^4=2*2*2*2=16

hence log[2](16)=4

since 16 = 2^4 power and a log is asking you to find what power of the base gives you its number, then the answer is 4

From
log_b (a) = x
means
a = b^x

Now
16 = 2^4
so
log_2 (16) = 4
