Was it Late May/Early June...remember visiting friends of elder brother in mid-seventies (about the same time as Queen's 25th year), they lived in Harpurhey, north Manchester. Sister now lives in Belfast, and she says the July 12 Protestant marches throughout Ulster is just like the Whit Walks...but more political.
Saw the film 'East is East' a couple of weeks ago on Film4 - and there's a Whit Walk featured - seeing that the film is staged in 1972 Salford, obviously they were still going strong then.

Yes I remenber it well. The Church of England had their walks on Whit Monday and Catholic churches on Whit Friday. Kids always got new clothes for Whit Week and on Whit sunday would visit relatives and receive gifts of money.

I remember them well, Brenda, especially the Italian Whit walks. If I remember correctly, certain areas of Manchester used to refer to the walks as "walking with the scholars".

Happy days: new clothes for Whit - if you were lucky - and I wasn't!
