If you have a potentially-fatal food allergy, nobody can blame you for providing your own food (unless the preparers have made clear they know your allergy and can be trusted to accommodate it).
If you have a picky palate? Bringing your own food is rude, unless everybody else is bringing their own.

Well, usually it would be highly improper, but if the family serving the dinner is making a ham, not all of us can eat it because of the salt content. However, you should always call the hostess first and explain before you walk in with a turkey.

if it is a potluck, but only bring like a dessert, a drink, for other s and yourself, or a side dish, like, ( gasp!) green bean casserole, or sweet potatoe casserole, and for pete's sake, do not bring a pumpkin pie! Everyone else will too! bring cool whip, or a couple bottles of soda, or ginger ale.

If it's just for you, then yes. However, if you've brought an extra pan for everyone, then no. Check with the hostess, though to make sure.

No, its not. But I suggest, if it's a potluck, then you should only bring a few dishes, since other people willl probaly bring somethin' too.
