Let's be honest. It was economics. Japan wanted an economic empire, and saw the Pacific rim and parts of China as their natural trading partners. Of course, since they had been exposed to European imperialism, they figured that was the best way to go about it.
Call it an error in judgment.

Creating a Japanese sphere of influence in Asia, with China, Korea, Philippines, Thailand [then Siam], Indochina [today Vietnam and Cambodia] and India. Kicking the British, Dutch [Netherlands], France and USA out of Asia. While the motives are understandible, Japanese acted quite brutally in the war. But, despite their defeat in 1945, ironically got some goals: Western control of Asia started to fall. And USA, despite winning the war on Japan, was unable to prevent wars in Korea and Vietnam, years later. Today Asia is free of colonial control, and may become a new superpower in the next future years. Ironically, Japan, defeated, got it wish. Now is the powerhouse, alongside China, Korea and India, of Asia.

Japan resented America for forcing it to be open to trade. (Commodore Perry) They resented Teddy Roosevelt for interfering in the war with Russia in 1905. They wanted the Pacific Ocean to be their territory. Remember they had seen the US take the Philippines and Hawaii.

China, Korea, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and the Philippines have self assurance the conflict began in 1910 whilst they have been invaded. the eastern needed to scare us with Pearl Harbor being bombed. sarcastically that's what surely positioned us in the conflict rather of protecting us out.

The Reich told them it was all some kind of Banzai-esque world-wide gameshow where the tools of war, instead of gunge machines and garish foam softballs,. are mobile infantry and fighter planes and the field of combat, as opposed to takeshi's castle, is East Asia.... They bought it and joined the war with all the lustre that you can see on the japanese tv networks and the rest as they say is history...

If you want a REAL answer on this, then WHY are you asking it on Yahoo Answers? These people haven't a CLUE about why Japan attacked the U.S.
It had to do with their oil, rubber and scrap metal being cut off from them

the japanese were subjected to western motivations, methodologies, tricks, phoney, forced diplomatic international inroads used to "break-down" and control and manipulate foreign government and nations into a state of abject servitude!!!!they learned their lessons from the ablest and most conniving experts the world has yet produced!!!spain, under the influence of the "inquisition" and the "jesuits' trading arm;opium used by the british to subdue and control china up until the "opium wars" of the 1800's was imported from it's colony in india!!!!japan used opium to affect control of manchuria and it's coal and iron deposits workers!!the shock of modern weapons like the machinegun on unarmed and prostrate civilian societies from the french and germans!!!trade and drug importations learned from the americans and the british!battleship design from the american and british...innovating upon every new device and invention and mode of propulsion;torpedoes which they mastered beyond their instruction from others e.i. into the "long lance" torpedo;which had no "tell-tale" wake, had better range, size and method of propulsion!!!feared and respected by all combatants throughout the war in the pacific!!!the japanese navy was one of the most superlative human organization ever concieved on the surface of this planet!!!exceptional and exemplary in it's planning, dedicated and courageous personnel at every level, execution of goals and the achievement of supremacy on raw excellence and diligence and courage!!savagery in war is the key to dominence and the japanese were no worst for it's extreme application!!coal, oil, iron and raw latex rubber, industrial diamonds, tin and aluminum were the supreme goals; as was opium, gold, silver and silks!!most of which had war-like applications;tires, parachutes, guns, tanks, naval artillery, steel for ships!!the united states had given scrap steel to japan for decades and had suddenly cutoff all these transhippments also shipments of fuel, oils, and other industrial essential products!!!we baited the japanese with an "obsolete" fleet into a war!!because we didn't believe that they could sink it for us in San Diego;we went through the addition expense in coal, fuel, crews pay and auxillary escort ships to move the whole fleet to Hawaii's Pearl Harbor where they could more easily "get a good swipe at it"!!!in the end the "short" 4 year war enriched, mobilized and "modernized" both nations out of the dreamier, sleepy 20 th Century past!!!oil fuel turbine driven fleets, societal engineering and controls,psuedo-democracies..smoke and mirrors governments of increasingly inhuman devices and methodologies..more clandestine...more secret..more surreptitious!!!!the best warriors..the best and the brightest of both sides died in flames..clearing the way for the cunning and the serpentine, unscrupulous remainder!!sad really...what a waste of human strength and courageousness...in japanese pilots alone..the epitome of human courage, determination and skill!!
