Has anyone else noticed (especially in the Con/Lib struggle) that peoples' ideologies get in the way of common sense, particularly when they start calling each other names? Well, I have!

I have a degree in English, which has taught me that you can't argue with Mark Twain. "Why do they call it common sense when so few people have it?"

I think you hit the nail on the head. Well said. I myself have fallen victim to over criticizing the right at times. The problem is we judge each other based on the others extreme voices when most of us sit somewhere in the middle. This post was refreshing to say the least. Anyone that wants a good common sense point of view from a true independent I suggest listening to Dan Carlins - Common Sense. He has a great podcast that will make you question yourself at times. Good job. I wish we could vote on Best Question..

Common sense is best than any ideologies, I think. People have an innate nature of knowing what to do and what would be best because of their intellect, which is a natural gift endowed at birth. Educated or not, one would know what to do because of this gift which is a tendency to protect ourselves from harm and to develop ourselves for betterment.
The need to respond to one's needs is an automatic response to our human cravings and one automatically seek for a solution, using common sense.
However, we have formed ideologies as guides for the betterment of more than one individual. The irony, is that, in the formation of these ideologies, we cannot comply and it is also us, who violates it. But, we cannot admit that, and so we resort to the twisting of logic in order to reason out, that we advocate in the very ideology that we violate. Such is the hypocrisy in which, the society of today have indulged in.
I think, it is best to go back on simple living.

Most ideology have the following in common:
1. It doesn't make sense to those who don't believe in it.
2. It is not open to other idealisms.
3. People practice it because they think its superior to other ideologies in many ways.
It's just up to people to realize why we have ideology.
I am proud to call myself Liberal, becuase it disputes point number 2 I said.

Yes, I have also noticed, when you depend too much on partisan propaganda for political research, stances on issues start conflicting with each other on both sides of the aisle.
Example:
protecting the 2nd amendment to prevent an oppressive government, but also supporting lack of oversight in secret surveillance programs because a politician says it is to make you safer.

Calling each other names has little to do with ideology and more to do with childish, rude behavior. I adhere to the ideology of common sense.

I've also noticed something else about the two ideologies, one is generally for inclusion, the other is generally for exclusion. There is no defense for ignorance and bigotry, yet it is displayed on here daily and proudly by some. The KKK thought they were protecting America's values and god was on there side, how do you defend that kind of thinking?

I know I'm tired of being called a "NeoCon" and asked when I'm going to ship out (in support of the war(s). There's very little about me that qualifies as "Neo." And, I've already done my 20 years. Funny, that the people who usually ask me that have never themselves served -- nor will they. I base my ideology on facts that are relatively easily researched, still, I get so many thumbs down.

It's been my experience that I'm called a name when the responder has an inadequate response and can't think of anything better.
My favorite is when they tell me to be a good little girl and bake cookies. I have a Ph.D. but I also like to bake cookies.
