Ok. I am obviously not going to grad school for English. I am going for music. So, how does one land a Univeristy job once they have there doctorate, and also, how does one recieve TENURE? Thanks

It depends on the school. Commonly in American liberal arts colleges, if you're lucky enough to have a tenure-track position, you have to work in that position for 3 or 5 years. Then you go before the tenure committee, which considers your professional development (how well you've taught classes, how much you've participated in faculty governance, books/articles/musical pieces you've written). You're then voted on by the faculty committee.

As I say, it differs in every college, but that's the basic outline.
