"Brewster's Millions" is kind of similar. So is Mel Brooks' "Life Stinks"

In the movie Coming to America (i know it's not a similar plot) there is a scene where Eddie Murphy is walking with his date and passes a pile of rubbish with two homeless guys sleeping. He gives them a paper bag that he had filled with several thousand dollars (taken from his servant semie who couldn't be trusted not to spend it).

They of course open the bag and voila! I believe the quote is 'mortimer....we're back!' The two homeless guys are the dukes.

It's quite funny and an obscure reference to trading places.

EDIT -

Some other movies that may be of interest:

The Man with a Million (1953) - based on Mark Twain's The Million Pound Bank Note. An american sailor who is stranded penniless in London becomes the wager between two rich brothers. They give him a million pound bank note and he has to survive on it. If he succeeds, he will get a job with them. Of course as he looks like a bum...so who will accept his money (even though it's legit....). Apparantly, the idea for Trading Places is based on this film.

Brewster's millions (1985) - Brewster is a poor minor league baseball player. He get's a $30m inheritance which he has to spend in 30 days according to the will. If he does, he get's 300m. Problem is that he can't have any assets at the end, he can't tell anoyone about the deal (so people think he's crazy) if he fails, two scheming trustees will get their hands on the money.

The Bank (2001) - Different actors and more a drama than a comedy, but it similar story line in that the little guys win in the end against the rich big guys.

This question makes me think that yes, there is another, older film that Trading Places may have been based upon. I'll look into it and I'll edit it into this answer if there's anything to add.
Ok, there's a 1954 film called The Million Pound Note that may have been the inspiration for Trading Places, but I have yet to actually read that it was.

The is an old Gregory Peck film called The Million Pound Note, it may have been dollar but i think the film was set in England. Peck is a poor sailor and these two rich guys set him up to prove that you can do anything or get anything you want without spending money, all he has to do is show the snobby shop clerks the note and they and everyone fall over themselves to do what ever he asks.
