After the Battle of Midway, the United States launched a counter-offensive strike known as "island-hopping," establishing a line of overlapping island bases, as well as air control. The idea was to capture certain key islands, one after another, until Japan came within range of American bombers.

In June 1943, the Allies launched Operation Cartwheel, which defined their offensive strategy in the South Pacific. The operation was aimed at isolating the major Japanese forward base, at Rabaul, and cutting its supply and communication lines. This prepared the way for Nimitz's island-hopping campaign towards Japan.

i believe that the incidence was begun with the makin island raid launched by the over large american submarine argonaut or was it the nautilus of the same class!!they had vast cruising capacity and landed several hundred of merrill's raiders to cause "scatter hell" and harass...more than take actual possession of the island!!!it was effective, focused and a surgical strike...we should've learned a great lesson by this for our "current morass" in iraq and elsewhere!!!do not sacrifice an american life for territory you do not trully even want!!!
