Like many teens, Holden is ... all of a sudden... faced with so many new awarenesses in life that he stays in a state of bewilderment . He realizes that things really are not either black or white... but there is that very large, overwhelming gray area called "life".

No, he seems pretty typical to me. In the first chapter, he says he had to "come out here and take it easy for a while" and that his brother D.B. "comes to visit him," which makes it seem as if he's had a breakdown and is in a treatment facility or something. But "crazy"? No. Sounds like he had more of a breakdown.
