If you are seriously into fashion designing you will have to spend money on a good sewing machine. Brother is a decent brand and then Kenmore will work too. Go to a store that has huge selections ask for advice from the sales staff and then try to find your pick second hand. A machine that has been cared for properly will last many years.

Personally, I don't recomend a second hand machine to someone who is new to sewing. You won't have the experience to recognise a potential problem with the machine. The bobbin or flywheel may not work properly, the tension may be incorrect and difficult to fix if the machine has not been cared for. If it has never been oiled it could cause problems.

Get a new one; any major brand will be fine - Brother, Kenmore, Singer, Bernina. Talk to the salesperson, who I hope will be knowledgeable, and tell them you are a beginner and don't need advanced features, that will keep the price down. Go into your local fabric store and ask their advice; they may tell you what they use or what they used when they started sewing. They might even have a lead on a good used one; they would at least know what "good" means in a used sewing machine.

You can't go wrong with a second hand Bernina. I bought mine used over 30 years ago and we are still together. It has been in the shop once in all that time because I wore a part out. It always sews, the autotension is always right on the money and I bought my daughter one just like it 6 months ago as a graduation present from design school. The newer discount machines are mostly plastic and I wouldn't sew on a Singer, new or old, if my life depended on it. Talk to a local machine repairman or go to a quilt shop and ask questions about machines there. They will give you go info on where to find a basic machine.

I currently use my mothers old Kenmore (about 40 years old!), and it is still working great. If you can get a decent one second hand, I would definitely recommend one.
