On my old VW golf there was an O-ring and not a gasket.....so it is possible, but I don't think domestic cars that old use them.
Double check with them....or even call another dealer and ask for the part number to check with what you got.
I've always used RTV silicone (blue) when replacing thermostat gaskets.......instead of the actual gasket......and never had it fail.

The thermostat on the 2.2L 4 cylinder does indeed fit inside the rubber gasket if the gasket has a groove in it to accept the thermostat.
Watch the way the old one comes apart.
The v6 takes a regular gasket.

What in the world are you talking about? First the gasket does not go on the thermostat. It goes on the housing. And what is a rubber ring? Never heard of such a thing. How old are you and do you know anything about cars? Maybe I can help.
