Horses can eat grain, sweet feed, hay, carrots, apples, grass, sugar cubes and salt blocks.Do not feed them celery, it is too stringy and can get caught in their throats.

Also, onions are poisonous for horses to eat, along with the weed golden rod. There are a bunch of different grains that horses can eat. Each grain has specific nutrition value for certain types of horses. Example, sweet feed can make a horse very hot headed. A horse that you want to remain calm would do better on pellets. There is senior feed or older horses. I could go on with other cases. It all depends on the horse. A vet or someone at a grain supply store should be able to help you choose the right grain.

Horses generally like apples but don't give them too much because a horse can actually become drunk from eating too many apples. Also, be careful with salt blocks. Do not leave them in the pasture or stall 24/7 because horses will sometimes lick their tongues raw. It is better to buy loose salt and mix it right into their grain.

To all of the individuals who have commented to this question re: Can horses eat oranges, grapes, raisins and peanut butter...There have been a lot of "I THINK" answers, and others indicating certain items are toxic. WHAT are you basing your answers on? Internet research? Personal equine experience? Credentials in the equine field (such as being a veterinarian, vet tech, ag. professional, degree in stable management, trainer, etc.)? As a member of the health care field (pharmacist) and a horse lover (40+ years as a horse owner, equine breeder and trainer, and years assisting in an equine neonatal intensive care unit and general equine vet care & teaching courses on veterinary medications at a large, private, Midwest University), when giving advice so important as this, I think it's very important to identify WHERE you are getting your information from. For example, such as when you say something is toxic - and it very well may be, PLEASE, identify where you found this info., so others can go there and read it, too, and educate themselves (and be as smart as you are!) or give your credentials...I guess this is may be my "trigger spot," possibly because having been an author of articles or giving vets and MD's recommendations, I HAD to identify WHERE I obtained the info. from (not ALL the time, but sometimes, ESPECIALLY if it were an UNUSUAL question - it gave the answer more credibility). That's really the point here: giving your response more credibility, and backing up your response with your credibility. I'm not trying to rag on anyone here at all - it's just that I get tired of hearing everyone say, "The internet is full of "crap" information." The reason why so many medical/veterinary/professional people say this is because individuals don't back up their information with the stuff I just talked about....Just sayin'....Not trying to be a rag on ANYONE!!!!!

The real question is are they good for your horse? Not if the horse can eat them.

My horse will eat most anything offered, including popsicles and pizza (I did not feed that to her, it was someone else)

I would think oranges and grapes are probably fine. Peanut butter is probably not too good could gum up the system and all that.

My old mare loved Strawberry Whole Fruit Popsicles, she would lick the popsicle and pull it off the stick.

Horses can eat things that are not healthy for them, so its better to make sure that it is healthy before they try and eat it.

Raisins and Grapes are TOXIC to horses. Do not feed these!!

Many horses eat oranges w/o problems. (Mine does, as do all of my barn mates')

Peanut butter (unless organic) contains animal proteins and this is a no-no for herbivores.

I wouldn't try it. All horses stomachs are different and if they get something in their system that their stomach doesn't agree with, It can kill them or seriously injure them. Just feed your horse stuff that you think they would eat in the wild.

Happy Trails

Don't give your horse an orange! Or anything with citrus. It's toxic to them!
