When you are crocheting you have to look at your work almost 100% of the time. You dont have to do this when you knit. Crochet is mostly for doilies, and various scarfs and afghans. You will be able to make yourself sweaters to give as gifts or use for yourself. I do both and enjoy doing both and suggest if you are into this to learn to do both.

I do both. We just answered this question at Thanksgiving today. Crochet is easier to learn the basics. To learn all the stitches takes time and patience. Knitting is more complicated to figure out the basics but everything is a combination of the two basic stitches. Both start with a slip knot. Both have a foundation row. Crochet is easier to shape and create crafts. Knitting is much nicer for clothing. Basically if you can figure out how to cast on in knitting you have the most complicated part down. Crochet up to the granny square is a cake walk. My advise is the same I gave my second cousin today, find a pattern you like and then you will know which you want to learn.

Having done both, I find crocheting easier. You have only the hook to manipulate, and you work each stitch one at a time, without having the whole row lined up on the needle. That way if you need to take something out several stitches back, you don't have to slide everything off the needle and possibly lose stitches trying to get back to where you messed up. Also, it is easier to make decorative and pattern stitches in crochet. I find it frustrating to make pattern stitches in knitting because I'm always losing the loops off the ends of the needle if I have to do some special stitch. The simplest answer for me, is it's easier to handle one tool to make the stitches, rather than two, plus the thread.

I'm learning to crochet and I can testify it's very easy to learn. I'm making myself some fingerless gloves. And to the person who thinks only sweaters can be knitted - you obviously haven't picked up a good crochet book! I've seen crocheted skirts, fitted tops, blazer-style jackets, socks and cool hats! Almost anything that can be knitted can be done by crochet!!

To what purpose? To what level of difficulty?
It's easier to learn how to do chain stitch with a hook than it is to learn how to pull a loop through another loop with a knitting needle (called a pin or stick in other languages). Crochet begins with chain stitch, that's it, not a matter of choosing among dozens of methods of casting-on before the first stitch can be knit. There are few choices of tools in crochet, just variation of hook size (except for afghan stitch projects), which is equated with "easier".
It's easier to produce is stable form with crochet. It's easier to produce a stretchy/flexible form with knitting. Lack of flexibility is the price of production ease.
