Hmmm, dont read the daily star myself but i do remember reading stories about single parents leaving older children alone to go out and social services were ready to cancel all leave. I dont know why it would be different because these are two older, better educated and well off people. This should have meant, to any person with sense, that they should have taken advantage of the childminding services on site, its not like they couldnt afford it, and even if they couldnt, Im sure even Portugese law would frown on very young children like this being left to fend for themselves. In fact the recent NSPCC ads on tv had a very young child being left in a cot, saying this was a very quiet child, implying that no-one was ever around to hear if he called out. I cant help thinking that if this couple had been unemployed, or in nonskilled work of any description, those other children would have been adopted by another couple by now.

Slight difference. Mathews knew where her child was all the time and we still do not know what abuse Shannon suffered while she was living with her parents. It has never been proved that the McCanns did the same or anything similar.

Whilst i would never have left children of any age alone, it seems that the McCanns genuinely felt that they were completely safe in that holiday complex and everyone made frequent checks on them throughout the evening. When i was a child in the 70s we used to go to Pontins holiday camps and it was quite common to leave the children alone in the chalets whilst the adults had an evening out in the bar/ballroom - and we are always being told that child kidnap is no worse than it was back then.

I prefer to think for myself and now allow the opinion of others to sway me. If the Portuguese police, the British police, the Social Services, the courts, and whomever decide they will not prosecute, then so be it.
The McCanns have paid a hideous price. And for those who say "what message does it send out?" - most of us have heard about the case of missing Madeleine McCann. The publicity has made sure we've all learned the lesson.

You start by a statement we read, who are the we in question. Are you leader of some kind of justice group. Oh well no doubt you are right but I would like to add one small proviso. If the McCann's should be charged with neglect then every parent who has left a child for a hour in the pub, trip to the local ASDA, chat with a mate down the block, or whatever must also be charged. Child neglect by your definition is creating the condition which made abduction possible. If we prosecute every parent who is guilty of that the courts would be bogged down from now until the next millenium. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
