i remember that it was about the guy dying and he wanted to say goodbye to everybody!!
it is a sad song!!

edit:this is what i got from "wikipedia":)

The song was based on a song called "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man") by Jacques Brel. Brel's song was translated into English by poet Rod McKuen, and McKuen's English version was recorded by Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio, which did not sell. The Beach Boys also recorded the song. Jacks rewrote part of the lyrics to "lighten them up." Jacks' revisions tended to add a bit of ambiguity as to the nature of the storyteller's demise, allowing listeners the option to choose whether the death is from suicide over a failed life - quite possibly to escape drug addiction - or someone accepting death from natural causes, such as cancer. References to a cheating wife were also removed. A comparison is given below. Jacks' recording included a recurring, reverb-drenched guitar riff that many sources attribute to Link Wray.

It is a suicide song, about some guy who's depressed, but he is finding it hard to die as his memories are getting in the way. I hated it then and still think it is sappy. If you are thinking about suicide, call a suicide hotline, hopefully you are just interested in the song. Suicide doesnt solve anything, if you feel like you indentify with the song, go to a hospital or call a suicide prevention hotline now!! With the right medicine a chemical imbalance responsible for those feelings can be corrected and you will feel much better.

My mom sings this song like crazy and the story behind it is that the author of the song was dying....and this was a look back at his life and an attempt to put his friends and loved ones at ease.

were just seasons out of time
