I am from the UK and wishing to pursue a post doctorate (phd) in electrical engineering. I would like to achieve this in an Amercian university, as i feel there is more oppurtunity to express my capabilities. Please could somebody tell me the average costs for an international student wishing to study in the US. Thank You

You can probably get a fellowship to cover most of the cost. Most universities have a firm policy of supporting their doctoral and postdoctoral students financially, but you might be required to teach some undergraduate classes or something of that nature. But in reality, what you'll have to do is contact individual universities and see what programs they have, because they vary widely. Almost all of them have websites with that information on them, or contact information so you can email or call. If it's any consolation, you most likely won't pay any more than US citizens do when they attend college in another state where they aren't residents. Costs are usually highest in the northeastern states and the west coast, and cheapest in the South, if that helps any.

You should be able to get a fellowship to study as a post-doc student (if you qualify as a PhD graduate in US terms). Unfortunately, a lot of them are with the defense department, so you would only qualify for non-defense ones (security clearances). Otherwise, the expense is more living (depends on where you are), which could be $25,000 a year or so at minimum.
