BYU from the WAC won the National Championship in 1984. They went 13-0 and only faced one team with a winning record. That being Michigan (6-5) in the Holiday Bowl. Many people, myself included, think that they did NOT deserve the title.

SMU is a good guess... what is the definitive meaning of "mid major"? I am going to go with the 1905 national champion the University of Chicago Maroons, coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg.
