3 suggestions here 1) How important is it to you that the job is done properly? If it is, I suggest you go and spend 3.99 at Wickes to get a roll of the proper stuff - sell the rest on ebay!! 2) How honest are you? - You could always go into wickes like lots of people and open a pack, nick 40cm then put it back - How annoying is that!! or 3) I'm sure there are many of your neighbours or friends which did number 1 and have the remainder lurking in the shed - just ask!!

Plasterboard Tape

Steve is right. The materials are not expensive and friends probably have some left over. In addition most hardware stores sell small kits for small repairs. Nylon mesh, a bit of mix, and sometimes even a small spatula and some sandpaper, all for less than four bucks.
Masking tape will separate after a while. It has no holding power, and its adhesive could interfere with the mix. Besides, masking tape doesn't do well with moisture of any sort.

The correct paper or fiberglass tape is designed to bridge and reinforce the seam so it won't crack through the joint compound. You say you will pva the tape itself so I'm guessing you are planning to just paint it out rather than apply joint compound? If this is the case, the previous answer stating it will lift off is correct. When the tape ages and the adhesive dries up, it will fall off. The other answer stating you may not be satisfied (because it will look like crap) is also correct. However, if you are going to use joint compound, it should work OK.

masking tape will work fine for a small job. I have used it for patching small areas for years. Put the first coat on lightly, because the water in the mud will tend to lift the tape.

No! Never use a product for anything than the intended use. Masking tape is not compatible with joint compound which should be used to do the job correctly.

you can use masking tape but only to paint over it, to properly join plaster boards before skimming boards the special tape is designed to absorb the plaster into the tape.

So often I answer these "CAN I" questions, and my answer is almost always,,,SURE. Then I add, "but you may not be satisfied." Such will the the case in this situation.

Not so much tearing---as paint won't stick right and seam will be highly detectable.
