No doubt about it.
Look at all the hurting songs out there that makes us all feel sad. Then again there's a whole bunch of feel good ones.
The industry thrives on people being emotional over the songs they write and perform. Different songs bring out different emotions in people to. A recent question asked for answers on what was a good song to play for a friend who was suicidal. The song suggestions came pouring in, but I can't honestly believe some of the choices...Like I said everyone hears and feels different emotions to songs.

I believe that you are right, music tends to have an emotional affect towards the mind and body. Positive music will most likely cheer up a person, as well as negative music, which will cause the person to feel sorrow or even depression. Music is a 50/50 emotional train. Not that it's bad, but this is just the way music has affected people.

That's the art of music, its an art of relating to your soul and emotions, but it can also affect your mood as well and set the perfect environment for a any occasion, some people are more effected by music than others, any genre of music can have this affect, it all depends on the words and how well the instrumental structure of the song is put together to fit the type of emotion the words describe.

Yes it can. It is one of the few hidden universal languages that we still use today, although it is widely misunderstood and completely exploited by many 'musicians'.
Maybe it is due to exposure - minor key and low tempo always makes us feel lower (if not sad), and a major key combined with high tempo has a happy feel. Dominant phrygian mode can feel either exotic and mysterious, or angry and aggressive depending on the timbre of the instruments used as well as other factors. A change of key (depending which keys and chords are used) can evoke strange emotions too.
I use music as a diary also, to remind me of times gone by when I used to listen to that particular song; this gives it a unique and individual level of connotation. In addition to this, how can we explain people's taste in music? That is an enigma in itself. Is this due to the emotions of the person that appear to be dominant in their personality? Or is it a combination of other things?
I believe that music is the key to our existence, somehow. Everything vibrates, the rate at which determines its state (solid/liquid/gas), and it has also been proven that everything consists of particles/waves. Therefore, everything has a 'sound'...
What is music if it isn't (on the most basic level) a technical arrangement of sounds that seem to fit together?
Music is the key. It is my favourite thing in the world. It can reduce anyone to tears, or make the most feeble person empowered. I love it =oD

You really read my mind, I was about to ask the same question! You know, I love music, music is my whole life, but maybe I've been listening to music so much that I've become completely addicted to it. The thing is serious that sometimes I wake up, select a song at random from my phone collection, and depending from the song, I feel just that way. For example, yesterday I woke up listening to "Roc Boys" from Jay Z, just listen to it on youtube, and you'll notice that it's such a lovely and lively song, with all the horns and sounds and voices all mixed together and perhaps some rhymes that will make you definitely laugh without control! As a matter of fact, yesterday I was particularly happy, my manager noted it! I was so happy and cheerful that I even gave up my seat for some older people on the bus TWICE! And even if I came home hungry because I didn't have lunch, I didn't really care, cuz I had ROC BOYS on repeat on my Nokia N73.
Now, this morning I woke up and the song that came randomly was "Phony" by shareefa. now, it's not a sad song, but it's a song that makes you pissed off about anything, that makes you think that every little unusual action by a friend of yours is a demonstration of how phony that person is. and i even started to think that my best friend's boyfriend was acting phony on me (which he really is, but i'm saying that because i'm still addicted to that song and it's still playing in my mind). Music can control your emotions if you let that happen, if you fall in love with music, music will let you fall in a state where you can't even recognize yourself, you just can't understand it. in fact, you too can't understand, if you could you wouldn't have posted this question here on yahoo answers to see what we think about it! No wonder some prefer making love with some music in background, because it makes them fall more in love with the lover they're making love with. a good song to make love to would be a love song, or something like SEXUAL HEALING, that smoothes things up. now, tomorrow wake up listening to sexual healing by marvin gaye, and you'll notice that you feel unreasonably HOT: you'll start licking your lips whenever someone stares at you, and maybe you start thinking "oh, he likes me", even though he's actually staring at your mascara that has been messed up due to the rain! music music music, who can understand it!
(ps., i think i'll take that experiment myself, i'm downloading marvin gaye right now! lol)

If music didn't play with your emotions than what would be the point in listening to it?

I completely agree with you. I usually tend to listen to music depending on the mood I am in. When I'm mad, I usually put on heavy metal like SlipKnoT or some Linkin Park songs...when I'm happy some lighter stuff like R&B and also, this might be a little cheesy, but when my GF broke up with me, I listened to Fall Out Boy songs because their lyrics related to the situation I was in. So, the music I listen mostly depends on the situation or mood I am in.

Yes, I agree when I listen to good music I get happy and start singing all around the house, but when a song comes on that is sad it can get you depressed and feeling sad.
