I bought a pay and display ticket and displayed it properly. I got back to my car only to find a parking ticket. I grabbed the parking officer, and he said that i paid the wrong machine to pay to park on this bay. theres two machines, one is called queen st car park, and one is just queen st. I payed for a ticket on the queen st car park, which is clearly signed. The other roadside one was not clearly visable and hidden behind a lampost. I want some help on wording a letter of appeal to the parking people. Thanks!!

Dear Sir/Madam,

On [date] I parked my motor vehicle [reg. no.] at Queen Street, [borough/town/post code or some other identifier], a place with which I was not wholly familiar, not having parked there before. I saw that it was in a “pay and display” zone, so went to the nearby machine to purchase my ticket, which I displayed prominently on the dashboard of my car. Upon completing my business and returning to the car, I was dismayed to find that I had been served with a parking ticket, although I was still within the allocated time for parking. I remonstrated with the official, who told me that I was displaying the wrong ticket. I pointed out that there was only one machine and that I had used it for paying for my ticket, whereupon he pointed to a machine which was out of view, behind a lamp post, and said that this was the machine in use for parking in Queen Street. It appeared that the other machine was for use in parking in Queen Street Car Park.

I feel most aggrieved that having done my best to comply with the regulations I should be fined for making a natural mistake as the result of the failure of the authorities to make it clear where motorists should pay to park in Queen Street as opposed to Queen Street Car Park. As I said before, I am not familiar with this system and it was by no means clear to me that there were, in fact, two separate machines. Clearly, if this had been apparent to me I would have used the appropriate machine for Queen Street.

I attach a small plan of the road and the relative positions of the two machines.

Yours faithfully,
Bubblebutt

I do hope that you will be able to have the ticket cancelled, but it seems to me, that the labelling and placing of these ticket machines is so confusing that many others will very likely have been "gotcha d" already.

I suggest that you ought to involve the local press, who are always happy to put these deceitful practices into print, and as a responsible citizen who feels seriously aggrieved, you ought to contact your local council representative. It is quite remarkable what local councils and their administrative staff will do, if they have the chance, and an axe to grind.

Try to take some photographs to illustrate your complaint, and if it comes to court, you will have a record of how the scene appeared at the time you were trapped, in case the sneaky b's modify the scene before you place the true situation on record.

And if it does come to a court appearance, it might be better if you represent yourself, and appear the very image of innocence, apologetic and MOST concerned that you were misled by the council markings and layout of the parking area into inadvertently breaking the rules.

I had a ticket in very similar circumstances to yours. I paid the fine at the cheap rate (£40) then appealed to the council. They were not interested so I then wrote to my MP who contacted the council. They listened to him and refunded my money. Send your MP an email!

i could say that's effective. in the journey that your charm is rejected you're charged an extra fee--meaning you lost the case and you wasted the college's time. purely such as you pay court expenses in case you circulate and protest a rushing fee ticket and you lose. in case you parked in the incorrect place-purely pay the fee ticket
