Like a lot of other posters, I will also have to give it to the 1998 Yankees. That team was unbelieveable.

Some others that would get some consideration:

The A's teams from 1988-90 were powerhouses. They won the World Series in '89, but fell victim to major upsets in '88 and '90. The 2002 A's had an unbeliveable second half that featured a 20-game winning streak, but it always seemed to fall apart in the playoffs for those early 2000s teams.

The Braves from 1992 to 2000. They had several other playoff appearances over the years, but I'd consider those seasons to be their prime. As a Phillies fan, I hated those teams, but you have to respect how they were able to dominate year in and year out. Things didn't always break their way in the playoffs (my Phils had something to do with that in '93), but it doesn't take away from what they accomplished.

The 1993 Giants have to be one of the greatest non-playoff teams of all time. They won 103 games but were edged out by the Braves on the season's final day.

The 1994 Expos. Who knows how things would've turned out had there not been a strike? If that team could've been kept together, it would've been like a baseball Dream Team.

The 1995 Indians went 100-44 in a strike-shortened season but were defeated in the World Series by a pretty incredible Braves team.

The 1999 Yankees were just about as good as the aforementioned '98 team.

The 2001 Mariners couldn't seal the deal in the playoffs, but any team that can win 116 games in the regular season is pretty darn good.

The 2004 and 2007 Red Sox may not rank among the greatest teams in terms of regular season, but they were both incredible come playoff time.

The 2005 White Sox capped off a 99-win regular season by going 11-1 in the playoffs.

It helped that Lynch made the defining play of his career three months after the deal a 67 yard touchdown run on which he was hit at the line, bounced off and broke another half dozen tackles to put away the New Orleans Saints in a wild card playoff upset at CenturyLink Field.

Just like that, Lynch was a star and "Beast Mode" was a part of the NFL lexicon, padding the pockets of the player who'd already filed a federal trademark on the phrase.

The question on the table is, what is the best team in mlb of the last 20 years, not the team with the best record.

2004 Boston Red Sox, to overcome a 0-3 deficit VS the Yankees who in '04 still had an embarrassment of riches, and then go on to dominate the 100 win Cardinals in the world series was pretty cool. Only MLB team to win a 7 game series after being down 3-0.

Impossible to say that the 1998 NY Yankee juggernaut could come back after being down in a 0-3 hole , especially when your most hated rival beat your top two starters in the first 2 games(Pedro and Schill).

1998 New York Yankees & the 2001Seattle Mariners, were the 2 best teams in last 20 years.

I would say the 1998 Yankees, only because they won the World Series, but stat for stat, and not only wins-loses, but fielding %, era's etc the 2001 Seattle Mariners have the edge, on paper anyway.

1998 New York Yankees. Even though the Seattle Mariners broke their regular season record for wins in 2001, the 98 Yankees won the World Series. That team had everything: clutch lineup, solid defense, great starting pitching, awesome bullpen. I don't think there is another team over the last 20 years that would've beaten that one.
