Socialism is an economic structure that exists to some degree in every nation on earth...
The ones that do it best are democratic to a degree... the ones that use it to abuse the people and steal taxes are called "Republics".
Anyone disagree?

the thing you must understand, is that the corporatist republicans(not all republicans) are for keeping their pseudo-monarchisms intact, and in power.
Anything that threatens to change that or lessen that power is denounced as socialist/communist ideals, regardless if it would make America stronger. America being stronger and better is not their concern.
Their concern is only their offshore bank accounts, and that their pawns keep defending them.
If you notice, giving tax money to the people who need it most is socialism, but givign it to corporations isn't.
Its called being a corporate boot-licker, which they say ebenefits America, even though 70% of American labor resides in small business.

A 'banana republic' is a corrupt south-american government, with only a pretense at democratic institutions.
There are certainly some socialized industries in almost every nations. Typically, at minimum, things like police and military protection, that would be impractical to put in the hands of competing private enterprises. There are also some industries that work about as well whether socialized, regulated, or left 'free' (such as telephone & utility services). The vast majority of industries, though, work better on a free market rather than a socialized basis.
So I can agree with that assertion, though, really, it's little more than a technicality.
Democrats certainly support socialism to a greater degree than republicans, though how well they execute it is debatebale. There is also no meanigful difference between the two as far as corruption is concerned. So I'd have to disagree with that last bit.

Sigh - taxes and social spending is not socialism. Using tax money to in part to support the poor is not socialism.
You have fallen into the Republican trap by accepting their definition of socialism and then trying to defend it - when most of this country still remembers the cold war "evils of socialism".
The US is a free market economy. We do not take over businesses like France did when they veered toward socialism. Our government buys its equipment and products on the free market.
The problems with unrestrained capitalism is what you are talking about when you reference Banana Republics. Again, something that Republicans favor - believing that holding businesses to rule of law in some way hinders the markets. The rule of law in business actually gives stability to the market and helps productive businesses thrive and prosper. The current bust in the housing market proves that better regulation of the morgage lenders was a good thing.

Some of the world's more socialistic countries include Sweden, Norway, France and Denmark-there are a lot of studies out there that citizens of those countries are among the most satisfied and fulfilled in the world, well above US citizens. That's proof enough for most objective people that socialism, even to a large degree, results in a positive system.

I think when Republicans talk about Socialism they mean Communism. Which didn't really work out. Not the general social structures.

We go off on the form of Socialism which was used by the USSR, China, Vietnam, and North Korea. What many Socialists in the US political world want, is not that much different then that of the leaders of the Soviets wanted.
