Well, with the satillite system we have in space, we have the GPS system, international television and phones. That is just off the top of my head.

The pursuit of space exploration has pushed the boundries of science in many areas, including materials science.

Weather satellites, picture taking satellites (like yahoo maps can show), TV satellites and other communication satellites, navigation satellites (GPS).

Without these satellites there would be no pictures of storms in the middle of the ocean, no live TV from anyplace more than 100 miles away. And GPS has become the most used navigation system in the world. It works by picking up signals from satellites.

The need for miniaturisation led to the development of integrated circuits and so ultimately led to the computer, GPS and satellite TV.

Then there are the developments in new materials such as carbon fibre, ceramics as heat insulation etc. etc.
