Is iraq really doing so well?
Sure the violence is down, and people are comming back.
But what does that mean.
We have soilders walking through the streets armed with guns. We have established essentially a police state. No one will step out of line
people are returning because of free health care, and the governemnt is buying them new houses.
not for nothing but, we rufuse social programs here because they are bad. But then when WE pay for them in Iraq we say that they are good.
I am not a hypocrate. That is why I left the Democratic party.

Anyone who says Iraq is some sort of quagmire that never gets better is delusional.

Just talk to soldiers who came from duty in Iraq. They will talk proudly about how many schools they helped build, and how sewers were constructed for the many neighborhoods that were in disfavor with Saddam. Without us, these places wouldn't even have a sewage system!

Young Iraqis, especially children, are captivated with the Americans. They salute them and give thumbs up.

The only task left is for us to make the Iraqi government strong enough and stable enough so they can handle things on their own. Every month, their police force and military get more experienced. Every month they are closer to being self-sufficient.

Does that seem like a lot? No, not at all.

Ironically, once we leave the insurgents will have a harder time getting new recruits, but we can't leave until we are certain the fledgling Iraqi democracy can withstand the destabilizing efforts of the insurgents. Hence, the Iraqi forces will not even have to contend with as much violence as they are being trained for now.

That to me, sounds like a recipe for success.

Iraq is not going well, don't believe the hype.

They are no closer to solving this problem than they were nearly 5 years ago.

The Surge may have helped with the violence, but it has produced nothing in the way of a political solution.

This war can only be resolved through a political solution, and all sides are still very far apart with that regard. Therefore congress must cutoff the funds for this war.

I wouldn't say it's going great, but it is definitely doing better. War ravaged countries are more in need of social programs, than the US is. I rather have my tax money going to a poor helpless family in Iraq, than some lazy freeloader living here.

Read "1984." Keeping us in a constant state of war or fear and constantly shifting the picture between progress and failure-that routine keeps us in line and afraid to challenge the status quo in a decisive way.
