Well I like to help people to a certain point but sometimes I just get a little selfish and want to help my self. I guess if they didn't like to do it at all they would be really selfish. It is not always good to keep helping people because then you will get overloaded in life with helping other people that you forget about yourself.

The reason why people get a good feeling from helping others is because when a person is helping others it takes them out of their own self concerns. Seeing the need of another person, one feels moved to help them, like the mother responding to a crying baby or someone rescusing a stray animal. A person helps another in a spontaneous way, with no notion of oneself.

But I need to tell you that there are many people that seek ways to help people, because 'secretely' (it's even hidden to them) they want to get a reward for doing it. There exist few people truly capable in this world to help others in a pure way, without having this kind of need behind their offer of help.

So there are these 3 possibilites.

A person helps other people often because they want to be seen as a helpful person, doing this they get a good feeling and confirmation from other people.

A person helps other people, probably roped into it by another person, or does it because they think other people will think less of them if they don't do it. These people aren't doing it from their heart, so they will have a resentment while they do it. Inside they will be saying to themselves: I offered to do this, but now that i'm doing it, I really don't want to do this.
Thus one won't feel good about helping others, because of the resentment, one's heart is not in it.

Then there is the true help, one just saves the drowning dog with no thoughts about oneself, not to gain anything. One will always feel a true goodness from this kind of helping.

Maybe the person who feels bad knows that they dont really care that they helped someone else so it makes them feel bad that they dont feel like other people though.

This is wrong though. If a person doesnt feel good when they help others there is no reason they should have to. As long as they dont go out of their way to cause problems for others.

It's said that helping the others means helping yourself. If someone feels bad doing that it might mean that he is very confident with him/herself.

If they have the opposite effect after helping someone, then I think their intention of helping isn't sincere.

Maybe that person feels they've been used somehow? That the person they helped could do more to help their own situation and they haven't done so?

Maybe they went all out to help others for so long that they weren't paying attention to their own needs.
