Fewer rights than western nations? Yes. The law and the culture has certain viewpoints on the female citizens of that country. For some good reading:

To all of those citing the recent case of the female rape victim; please get your facts straight before using something as evidence.
The female was given lashes for violating the rules of being alone with a man while unescorted by a male relative, not because she was a rape victim. Of course I think this is still wrong but this was because she violated another rule; she could have recieved this sentence even she werent raped. It was NOT because she was a victim.
And contrary to the rapists getting away with it, they were sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Just look it up and get the facts straight.

No. They are not permitted to drive.
Women's Rights
Women in the kingdom continued to suffer from severe discrimination in the workplace, home, and the courts, and from restrictions in their freedom of movement and their choice of partners. The religious police enforce strict gender segregation and women’s public dress code of head-to-toe covering. Women were not allowed to vote or stand as candidates in the municipal elections. Women are also excluded from the weekly majlis (council), where senior members of the royal family listen to the complaints and proposals of Saudi citizens.
Women cannot work, study, or travel without explicit permission from a male relative. Their freedom of movement is further restricted by a law prohibiting them from driving. While a new labor law passed in late September 2005 reportedly expands the professional fields where women are eligible for work, they continue to be barred from jobs that are deemed “not suitable to their nature.”

Shariah law sees women as having only half the rights as that of a man. And no, women are not allowed to drive in Saudi.

randisal is correct! They cannot drive, or ride a bicycle in public. You should google "sri lanka maid saudi arabia" to see how women ge sentence for beheading, without having been allowed to even have a lawyer defend them in court.

I'm not quite sure they can, they have to be with a man at all time and I don't think an arab man would accept being in the passenger seat. I think they have to take a cab or ask someone to drive them...aurgh, must be hell living there.

I read that too a few years ago, children of 12 years old (boys) could drive, but grown women couldn't. I hope this has changed now.

According to people I've met who have been there, the one thing that stands out in their minds is how all the maids in the hotels are men.

of course women have rights in saudi!!! I think the reason that they dont allow women to drive is respect. Can you imagine Islam is supposed to treat its women good because we're precious but then having them drive you around would look like your slave driving them! its just that sort of thing. And the reason we wear the veil is because like pearls are found protected by its shell, we are protected by our veil.
anyone that decides to start on Islam please dont bother answering. thank you.
live and let live.
