Fudge black friday. If you want a good laptop today; I'd consider looking at the following circuit city laptops I've found. (I don't know, I guess I'm just not a Best Buy person... but whatever. U want a laptop, so consider what I'm saying.

The things I'd look for in a decent notebook are..

-Price ($400 - $600 max)

-The size of the Memory (1 or 2gb) ..512mb won't cut it for me

-The size of the Harddrive (around 80gb +)

-The Processor (A Dual Core like AMD 64 or Intel Dual Core for multi-tasking ; or something like an Intel D or AMD Sempron would do it for basic use)

-Wireless Connectivity

-If it can burn DVDs / CDs

-Graphics Card [depending on what I'm using it for.. like nvidia for gaming/ watching videos on foodnetwork.com.. or the Intel Media Accelerator for just homework / school]

-Thickness & Size of the screen

I comparison shop a LOT. I was answering a similar question today and have found the following laptops:

Compaq Presario C717NR 15.4" Widescreen Laptop:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Compaq-Presario-C717NR-15-4-Widescreen-Laptop-C717NR/sem/rpsm/oid/196359/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

This is a Compaq Presario @ circuit city's online site.
The price you pay is $449. Also, there is an additional $150 rebate, which would bring it down to $299. If you're strapped on cash, I would suggest the Compaq

Toshiba Satellite A215-S7413 15.4" Widescreen Laptop Computer:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-Satellite-A215-S7413-15-4-Widescreen-Laptop-Computer-A215-S7413/sem/rpsm/oid/196558/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

This Toshiba has a larger hardrive, better processor, and graphics card; compared to the previous Compaq. I would get this, even if it's a little pricier; just for extra storage and performance. (This has an AMD processor; while the compaq has an intel. Don't know if this matters much to you.) Also, there's a built-in camera. :O

The price is $549 with a $150 rebate.. making it $399.

Unfortunately, those laptop's prices are only on sale today. I checked Best Buy also, but couldn't find anything at this price or level of performance.

If you're not shopping today, I suggest the Compaq Presario F572US that's at Fry's Electronics. It's like $500 flat; plus tax, of course. THe F572US is the notebook that I am currently using :] (got it not too long ago @ Circuit City for $479 after a $50 rebate and a seperate rebate for the printer it came with))
I tried going on to Fry's site online, but I guess it's just not working for me right now.

Also, you could try Buy.com:
http://tinyurl.com/2ljfue (it's a long search html thing, lol)
They have notebooks at around the $500, but the two that I saw are running on Windows Vista Basic, while the ones on Circuit City run on Windows Vista Premiumare and are cheaper, even before rebates.

Happy Turkey Day everybody!! x]

Try Best Buy's Black Friday special if you just want a laptop.
You really ought to say what you intend to do with the laptop. If you want some email and web surfing, cheap is OK. If gaming, a $500 laptop will be pathetic.

Best Buy 5am. They've got a desktop for 199$ and a Sony laptop for 399. You've gotta get a tent and litereally camp there tonight to have a chance to get it though...

Most any retail store in the US will carry Black Friday specials for laptops at said prices.

I would HIGHLY advise you keep in mind that these bare-bones laptops will not be able to do much more than Internet, Word processing, and e-mail, along with non-3D games like solitaire.

Happy Shopping!

honestly as far as laptops go you get what you pay for. Unless you know somebody you can get a decent used one from, if you buy one new chances are its going to be poopy. You aren't going to have a lot of RAM, it will be suseptable to virus's, and it will not be able to be upgraded. In five years it will be obsolete. I think it would make more sense to pay a little more for something you can keep going for a few years. And Scott is very right it is going to have NO BELLS AND WIstles at all

Geez, you can get one of those anywhere. I was at Office Depot today and saw one with better specs than that for $379.99. It was a compaq.
