The first marketable rock band title goes to Bill Haley and The Comets, dating back to 1951.

At and/or around the same time, there was a large following of single man music artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, The "Big" Bopper, Buddy Holly,Chuck Berry....and of course.....ELVIS!!!

But Bill and The Comets became the first organized multi-musician group of the Rock n' Roll genre who recorded and toured together....setting the foundation for other bands to follow.

Depends what you call rock. In its generic form there have been bands playing what most people would identify as rock'n'roll since before the 1950s. These were mainly black Americans. It was not until Elvis Presley appeared in the mid 50s that white middle class Americans allowed this sort of music to be absorbed into mainstream popular (pop) music.

I guess it's Bill Haley & The Comets. It can't be Elvis or any other solo artist because they're not bands. It's not the Beatles or any other British Invasion band either because there were a few American bands in the 50's.

Bill Haley and the Comets,1953 is considered to be the first R&B band. However the turm Rock & Rock dates back into to late1920's. Arguable it is said to be Trixie Smith, for the song; "My man rock's me". The first modern day rock & Roll song is considered Elvis's; "That's alright mama" recorded in 1956 for Sun Label.

I'm pretty sure it was The Cream, because The Beatles weren't a rock band in the true sense. Well, I think Cream were the first well-known band that exclusively played rock anyway.
Also, Eric Clapton was the first famous person to use a wah pedal on a studio recording ("Tales of Brave Ulysses" - awesome track!). Bit of trivia for you =oD

This is usually credited to be The KInks. There were plenty of other bands before this, but The Kinks are believed to have giving birth to the rock genre.

It depends how you define 'rock' I suppose. If you mean something heavier than 'rock n roll' then I'd go for The Who - they certainly paved the way for 60's rocknroll pop to get heavier and they were smashing up their instruments on stage back in 1965!

Do you mean 'Rock' or 'Rock & Roll'?

If it's Rock and Roll then it's Bill Haley & The Comets

If you mean Rock then it's the Yardbirds.
